When did Eurovision start?
The first Eurovision Song Contest was held in Lugano, Switzerland in 1956 with just seven countries. It is now the longest-running annual TV music competition in the world.
Which country has won Eurovision the most?
Ireland and Sweden share the record with seven wins each. The UK, France, the Netherlands and Luxembourg follow on five.
How many countries take part in Eurovision?
52 countries have taken part at least once since 1956. Around 40 compete each year, with a record 43 in 2008, 2011 and 2018.
Is Australia in Eurovision?
Yes — Australia has competed every year since 2015. Other non-European entrants include Israel, Cyprus, Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan, while Morocco appeared once, in 1980.
What are the “Big Five” in Eurovision?
France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom qualify for the final automatically, as the contest's largest financial backers.
Has Eurovision ever been cancelled?
In its 70-year history the contest has been cancelled only once — in 2020, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
