The Mekong River runs through Laos and is one of the great rivers of Asia — it's the lifeblood of the country.
Laos is the only landlocked country in Southeast Asia, surrounded by China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar.
Laos was formerly known as "Land of a Million Elephants" — elephants are still an important symbol in Laotian culture.
