🌍 Flag facts
The flag has 50 stars, one for each US state. The 50-star flag was first flown on 4 July 1960, after Hawaii became a state.
The 13 stripes stand for the 13 original colonies that declared independence from Britain in 1776.
There have been 27 versions of the flag. A star was added each time new states joined, and the 50-star flag has been used the longest.
Apollo astronauts planted 6 American flags on the Moon between 1969 and 1972.
