Flags With Weapons On Them

Most countries soften their founding struggles into abstract stripes and stars. A handful do the opposite — putting the weapon itself on the flag. From Mozambique's AK-47 to Barbados's trident, here is every national flag that carries a weapon, and what each one means.

The famous one: Mozambique 🇲🇿 — Mozambique's flag is the only national flag on Earth to show a modern firearm: a bayonet-fixed AK-47, crossed with a hoe over an open book. Adopted in 1983, the rifle stands for the armed struggle for independence — and it's actually written into the country's constitution.

On the arms, not the flagZimbabwe and Timor-Leste (East Timor) both feature a rifle on their national coat of arms, but not on the flag itself — so they don't quite make this list. Mozambique remains the only country to put a modern gun on the flag proper.

Why put a weapon on a flag?

Almost every weapon here means the same thing: a fight for freedom, and the will to defend it. Newly independent nations often chose to show the tools of their struggle rather than hide them — spears and shields for the warriors who resisted colonial rule, muskets and cannon for the wars of independence, and, in Mozambique's case, the very rifle that won it. What reads as militarism to some is, to these countries, a proud record of how hard sovereignty was won. Most of the weapons are deliberately traditional; only Mozambique's is modern.
