The flag of Niue has a bright yellow field with the Union Jack in the canton, to which five yellow stars have been added — a large one on a blue disc in the centre, and four smaller ones on the arms of the cross. Niue is a self-governing island nation in the South Pacific, in free association with New Zealand.
About the Niue flag
The flag was adopted in 1975, when Niue became self-governing. Unusually, its Union Jack is modified: the bright yellow field is said to represent the warm feelings of the Niuean people towards New Zealand and the island's sunshine. The large gold star on a blue disc in the centre stands for Niue and its self-government, while the four smaller stars represent the Southern Cross, echoing the link with New Zealand.
