The real Spanish flag has a very detailed coat of arms on the yellow stripe — a shield split into four parts for old Spanish kingdoms, plus a crown and two tall columns. It's one of the most detailed flag emblems in the world!

The two columns are the Pillars of Hercules, said to mark the edge of the ancient world at the Strait of Gibraltar. A ribbon wrapped around them reads 'Plus Ultra' — Latin for 'further beyond'.

Red and yellow have been Spain's colours since the 1780s, chosen partly because they stand out clearly at sea, unlike some other flags of the time.
