Azerbaijan sits on the Caspian Sea, the largest inland body of water on Earth, on the boundary between Europe and Asia.
The flag was first raised in 1918 by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic — the first secular democratic republic in the Muslim world — and was restored in 1991.
