🌍 Flag facts
The blue and red bands stand for the people of Haiti joining together. The story goes that the white was torn out of an older French flag, leaving just blue and red.
The white box holds Haiti's coat of arms: a palm tree topped with a red cap of liberty, flanked by flags, cannons and drums, above a scroll.
The scroll reads 'L'Union Fait La Force' — 'Unity Makes Strength' — Haiti's national motto.
Haiti shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. In 1804 it became the first country in the world to be founded by people who had freed themselves from slavery.
