🌍 Flag facts
The golden bird is a Raggiana bird-of-paradise, the national bird of Papua New Guinea. It is famous for its beautiful, colourful feathers used in traditional dances.
The five white stars form the Southern Cross, a group of stars you can see in the night sky south of the equator. Several countries in the southern half of the world show it on their flags.
Red and black are traditional colours used in Papua New Guinean art and tribal culture. The flag was designed by a 15-year-old schoolgirl, Susan Karike, in 1971.
Papua New Guinea sits just north of Australia. It has thick rainforests, high mountains and hundreds of islands — and more than 800 different languages are spoken there, more than any other country!
