The golden sun has eight rays, one for each of the first eight provinces that rose up in the fight for freedom from Spain in 1896.
The three stars stand for the three main island groups of the Philippines: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
The Philippines flag is special: in times of war it is flown upside-down, with the red band on top instead of the blue!
