🌍 Flag facts
The golden ball of rings is an armillary sphere, an old tool sailors used to study the stars. It stands for Portugal's great age of exploration, when its ships sailed all around the world.
The shield in the middle has seven golden castles on a red border and five small blue shields, each with five white dots, from Portugal's history of battles hundreds of years ago.
In the 1400s and 1500s, Portuguese explorers like Vasco da Gama sailed to India, Africa and Brazil, making Portugal one of the first great sea powers.
Portugal is a sunny country on the coast of Europe. It's famous for football, for custard tarts called pastéis de nata, and for cork from cork-oak trees.
