The two blue stripes stand for the sky and the two oceans near Central America, and the white stripe stands for peace.
This is the plain version of the flag. The government's version has a coat of arms in the middle, with five volcanoes, a red cap of liberty and a rainbow.
El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America, but one of the most crowded. It sits on the Pacific coast between Guatemala and Honduras.
It's nicknamed the 'Land of Volcanoes' because it has so many — around twenty — and some are still active today.
