The white bird is a double-headed eagle — an eagle with two heads looking in opposite directions. It's a very old royal symbol used across eastern Europe for hundreds of years.

On the eagle's chest is a red shield with a white cross and four shapes called firesteels (they were once used to make sparks). They stand for a Serbian saying about unity.

The red, blue and white stripes are the traditional Slavic colours, shared by several countries in the region like Russia and Slovakia.
