🌍 Flag facts
The two crossed keys, one gold and one silver, stand for the keys of heaven that Jesus is said to have given to Saint Peter. A red cord ties them together.
Above the keys is the papal tiara, a tall crown with three levels that popes once wore.
The flag is square. Only Vatican City and Switzerland have square national flags. The emblem was redrawn in a new official version in 2023.
Vatican City is the smallest country in the world, inside the city of Rome. It is home to St Peter's Basilica and the Pope, the leader of the Catholic Church.
