🌍 Flag facts
The Sun of May has a face and 16 rays, taking turns straight and wavy. It is linked to May 1810, when the sun is said to have shone through the clouds in Buenos Aires as people called for independence from Spain.
The nine stripes stand for the nine departments (regions) Uruguay had when it became independent.
Uruguay hosted and won the very first football World Cup in 1930, and won it again in 1950.
The capital, Montevideo, sits on the coast of the wide Río de la Plata, close to where it meets the Atlantic Ocean.
