The middle of the real flag shows an eagle holding a shield. On the shield is the head of an aurochs — a huge wild ox that once roamed the land — along with a star, a rose and a crescent moon.

The three colours are shared with neighbouring Romania, with whom Moldova shares a language and much of its history.
